Chennai: In an attempt to create more quality sportspersons, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today announced a special scholarship for elite sports persons besides sanctioning funds for other efforts.

According to the new scheme, five sportspersons, men and women, will be selected and efforts will be put in to prepare them to win laurels at international competitions such as Olympics, a government release here said.

Jayalalithaa sanctioned Rs 1.25 crore for this purpose, which includes training and participation in foreign countries, procuring high-tech equipments and providing quality food for athletes, it said.

Further, she announced hiking assistance for school and college students bagging medals at national level,from Rs 5000 to Rs 10,000 and Rs 13000 from Rs 6500, respectively.

The government will incur an expense of Rs 39.76 lakh due to this increase, it said.
She announced another Rs 50 lakh as recurring expenditure to award Rs one lakh, Rs 75,000 and Rs 25,000 to three toppers in 20 categories of athletic competition for the state-level Chief Minister`s Troply. She sanctioned Rs 62 lakh towards developing local games in 31 villages in the state.
