Shubman Gill’s neck injury sparks workload debate
Shubman Gill’s neck injury during the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens has raised fresh concerns over the India captain’s growing workload. With his availability for the second Test in Guwahati now uncertain, discussions have intensified about whether leading both the Test and ODI teams is taking a toll on him.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra recently shared his thoughts on the matter, recalling a past conversation with head coach Gautam Gambhir. Chopra revealed that Gambhir had been clear and direct in his advice regarding player workload.

According to Chopra, Gambhir suggested that if players feel fatigued, they should consider opting out of the IPL. He also said that if captaining an IPL franchise feels too demanding, players should avoid taking up such roles. Gambhir’s stance was firm: whenever a player represents India, physical fitness should ensure they are also mentally ready to perform.
Chopra agreed with Gambhir’s perspective, adding that batters in good rhythm generally prefer to continue playing to make the most of their form—provided they are not dealing with burnout.
