At a time when the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Kerala Fire and Rescue Services, police and other agencies have intensified their search operations in landslide-hit Wayanad to trace the missing persons, a sniffer dog of Odisha Police K9 squad has left for Kerala on Sunday to help in the rescue operations.
Storm, a sniffer dog deployed with Berhampur police, along with a team of four police personnel comprising one inspector, two sub-inspectors and a trainer of the K9 dog have left for Kerala from Berhampur.
According to sources, Storm, a German Shepherd, is the only dog of Odisha Police with expertise in search and rescue operations. It will help the rescue teams in tracing out lives trapped under debris and collapsed houses.
Notably, the search and rescue operation has entered its sixth day today following massive landslides hit Wayanad district in Kerala on July 30.
While the death toll in the landslides breached the 350 mark, more than 200 persons are still missing.
Besides loss of life, there has been massive destruction of properties with hundreds of houses washed away, along with other serious damages. Also, numerous cattle and other animals have disappeared.
