MS Dhoni's special gesture for Virat Kohli wins hearts

MS Dhoni hosted Team India for dinner at his home in Ranchi. The Men in Blue are in the city for the first ODI against South Africa, scheduled for November 30. Dhoni often invites national players to his residence whenever there is an international match in Ranchi, and he didn’t miss the chance this time as well.

MS Dhoni welcomed the Indian cricket team to his Ranchi residence for dinner ahead of the first ODI against South Africa on November 30. The former captain, known for his warm hospitality, makes it a point to invite players home whenever an international fixture brings the team to his hometown.

Virat Kohli became the centre of attention during the gathering, and Dhoni personally dropped him back at the team hotel after the meal. Kohli, who now features only in the ODI format, last played the 50-over series against Australia, where he bounced back with a half-century after enduring two back-to-back ducks.

The last ODI played by India at the JSCA International Stadium came in 2022, where the hosts put up a strong performance. This time, Rohit Sharma returns to lead the side, with his experience expected to be crucial in the absence of regular skipper Shubman Gill.

Rishabh Pant, back in the ODI squad after a long gap, also visited Dhoni’s home. The left-hander recently captained India in the second Test against South Africa—a match that ended in a heavy 408-run loss. Pant’s 49 runs across two innings drew criticism for his shot selection, prompting him to apologise to fans and promise improvement. The ODI series now offers him an opportunity to regain confidence and shake off the disappointment of the Test defeat. His last ODI appearance came in August 2024, and Gill’s absence may open up more batting opportunities for him in the middle order.

Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has also been recalled for the South Africa series and joined the team at Dhoni’s home for the dinner. With several players returning and the squad aiming to rebuild momentum, India will hope to put up a united and strong performance in the upcoming ODI series.
