Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has strongly criticised the national selectors for overlooking all-rounder Axar Patel in the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand, arguing that Axar currently offers far more value than Ravindra Jadeja in white-ball cricket.
Kaif Questions Selection Calls
Axar Patel last featured in an ODI during India’s tour of Australia in October 2025 but has since been ignored for subsequent series against South Africa and New Zealand. His absence has drawn sharp criticism from Kaif, especially at a time when Jadeja’s form with both bat and ball has come under scrutiny.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif did not mince words while comparing the two left-arm all-rounders. He stated that Axar is clearly ahead of Jadeja in ODI cricket, particularly in batting impact and bowling versatility.
‘Axar Ahead in Batting and Bowling’
Kaif highlighted Axar’s superior strike rate, six-hitting ability and effectiveness with the new ball. He questioned why Axar was not even included in the squad, especially against a New Zealand side known to struggle against spin. Kaif also raised concerns over the continued backing of Nitish Kumar Reddy, pointing out that India already have four pacers in the squad, with Arshdeep Singh sitting out.
Case for Playing Axar and Jadeja Together
The former batter further suggested that India could play both Axar and Jadeja together to achieve better balance. He noted that despite both being left-arm spinners, their bowling styles are different. While Jadeja usually operates after the powerplay, Axar has the ability to take the new ball and has previously delivered key breakthroughs, including in the Champions Trophy.
Numbers Tell the Story
Jadeja’s recent ODI numbers have raised concerns. In his last five matches, he has taken just one wicket at an average of 257, with an economy rate of 6.11. With the bat, he has scored 87 runs from four innings. In contrast, Axar impressed in Australia, scoring 75 runs at an average of 37.50 and taking three wickets at an economy of 4.45.
With limited ODI opportunities ahead of the 2027 World Cup and the T20 World Cup just a month away, the debate over India’s all-round options has intensified. As pressure mounts, Jadeja finds himself running out of time to cement his place, while calls for Axar’s return grow louder.
