Team India superstar Virat Kohli's retirement from the longest format of the game before the Test series against England had stunned many experts and several fans across the globe.

According to former England opener Nick Compton, a disconnect between the current Indian team and Kohli‘s playing style may have played a huge role in his decision to retire from Test cricket before the England tour.

"I’ve heard that the current Indian setup has its own approach, which might not have didn’t allowed him to function in the environment he preferred. Sometimes, new leadership wants full control, and that might not have been ideal for someone like Kohli," said Compton during a recent interaction.

"It’s nearly impossible to maintain the same level of hunger for all formats. Perhaps the management could have supported him by better managing his workload and allowing him more time off. I’m not sure what discussions took place internally, but I would have liked to see him play for another two years," he added.

Notably, Kohli finished his career as the fourth-highest run-scorer in India‘s Test history. He garnered a total of 9,230 runs at an average nearing 47 from 123 matches. His 30 Test centuries also placed him fourth among Indian cricketers.
