Why CSK Is Letting Go of Their Slingy Star

According to reports, CSK has decided to release Pathirana into the auction pool, barely a year after retaining him for a massive ₹13 crore. The decision stems from ongoing concerns over his fitness, recurring injuries, and the impact of his remodelled bowling action.

Ever since Pathirana adjusted his release point now slightly higher than his original slingy style he has struggled with consistency and rhythm. The CSK support staff tracked him closely during SA20 and the last IPL season but felt his performances dipped significantly.

A Change of Heart After Lengthy Discussions

The franchise management met on Friday evening to evaluate options. Though Rajasthan Royals had earlier attempted to acquire Pathirana in a trade involving Ravindra Jadeja, CSK initially resisted. However, persistent fitness issues and uncertain recovery timelines forced them to reconsider.

A Bright Start Dimmed by Injuries

Pathirana was a revelation in CSK’s 2023 title-winning season, delivering fiery yorkers at 140 kmph. But injuries, form fluctuations, and an economy rate of 10.14 in IPL 2024 raised red flags. With Nathan Ellis likely to handle death overs, CSK now seeks a pacer who can also thrive in the powerplay.

More Players Released; A Big Trade Completed

Alongside Pathirana, CSK is also set to release Devon Conway, Vijay Shankar, Deepak Hooda, and Rahul Tripathi.
Ahead of retention day, they completed a blockbuster trade, Sanju Samson joining CSK, with Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran moving to Rajasthan Royals.
