Cuttack: Indian team made their presence felt with a dominating performance at the 21st Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship which kick-started at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack today. On the inaugural day of championship, the Indian men’s team led by skipper Sharath Kamal defeated Scotland 3-0. Similarly, the Indian women’s team humbled Sri Lanka 3-0.
Indian men’s team are clubbed with Singapore and Scotland in group B, while England is placed in group A and it has Sri Lanka and Cyprus for company.
In the women’s draw, India is part of group B with South Africa and Sri Lanka, while group A features Singapore, Wales and Scotland.
Earlier in the day, Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal inaugurated the championship.
Hosting the international championship is a matter of pride for everyone in Odisha, the Governor said on the sidelines of the inauguration of the event.
Odisha Sports Minister Tusarkanti Behera, who was also present on the occasion, said the State government will take steps to organise more such events in coming days. “I have received a proposal to set up a table tennis academy in the State and will definitely consider it,” added the minister.
