As the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 heads into the high-stakes Super 8 stage, all eyes are on India’s top-ranked T20 batter Abhishek Sharma, who is yet to open his account in the tournament. After entering the global event on the back of a prolific run including an impressive T20 series in Australia and consistent performances in bilateral contests, expectations were sky-high for the stylish left-hander. However, the tournament has so far tested his resilience.
Abhishek’s campaign began on a disappointing note when he was dismissed for a first-ball duck against the USA. He then missed the Namibia fixture due to a stomach bug. On his return, the opener fell early in matches against Pakistan and the Netherlands, unable to find his rhythm in the powerplay.
Despite the string of low scores, former India coach Ravi Shastri has thrown his weight behind the youngster. Speaking on the ICC Review, Shastri described the rough patch as a “positive” for the team.
“I look at it as a positive that Abhishek Sharma has got three zeros. Save your best for the important periods in the tournament. Teams will be a little worried that he's not got runs,” Shastri remarked.

Team India’s Collective Strength
India have managed to maintain momentum thanks to timely contributions from other players. Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma have all stepped up when required, ensuring the team remains balanced and competitive.
Shastri believes India possess the most complete playing XI in the tournament and expects minimal changes to the lineup. He highlighted the importance of bowling depth, especially in dew conditions, citing options like Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube and Tilak Varma as crucial assets.
With West Indies and Zimbabwe awaiting in the Super 8s, India will look to maintain their dominance and perhaps witness Abhishek Sharma unleash his best when it matters most.
