Dhaka: The International Cricket Council says it decided to reduce the number of teams in the 2015 World Cup from 14 to 10 because it believes that lower—ranked teams are less likely to perform well in the 50—over format.

ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat told a news conference Friday that it was difficult for weak teams to perform in the World Cup because the format was “more skill—based” and that the world body was instead looking to spread the game through the Twenty20 format.

The ICC decided on the team reduction last year.

Lorgat’s comments came a day after Cricket Kenya chief executive Tom Sears criticised the ICC for having a 10—country tournament in 2015.

This year’s World Cup is a 14—team event that runs from Saturday till April 2.
