Three members of a family were seriously injured in a violent altercation over a property dispute in Dhenkanal on Saturday. The incident, which took place in Talabarakot village in the district, involved alleged gunfire by one Mayadhar Behera.
As per reports, the altercation took place in Talabarakot village, located within the jurisdiction of Dhenkanal Sadar Police Station. The accused, Mayadhar Behera, allegedly shot his wife Kaikeyi Behera, his son Bana Behera, and his sister-in-law, Shubhadra Behera, with a country-made firearm. He reportedly further assaulted them using a sharp-edged tool. They were critically injured in the process.
Investigation Underway
On being informed, Dhenkanal Sadar Police reached the spot and arrested Mayadhar Behera. The weapon and tool used during the attack were also seized.

All three victims were initially treated at Dhenkanal Hospital but were later transferred to SCB Medical College and the hospital in Cuttack for critical care. Their condition is stated to be serious and they are currently battling for their lives.
Dhenkanal Sadar Police have registered a case and started an investigation into the incident.
The incident underscores ongoing issues related to family property disputes in Odisha, sometimes escalating into violence. Earlier last year, a woman allegedly set herself on fire in Balasore district following a fight with her husband over some family dispute.
