Former India ODI team captain Rohit Sharma is set to be conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri, one of the country’s highest civilian honours, as the Padma Awards were announced on Sunday, January 25. The recognition places Rohit among a select group of sportspersons acknowledged this year for their contribution to Indian sports.
Rohit Sharma, who currently leads the Indian men’s cricket team, has been awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour. The announcement marks a significant moment in his career, recognising his impact on Indian cricket and his role as a leader on the international stage. Rohit’s inclusion in the honours list highlights his standing as one of the most prominent figures in Indian sport.
Padma Awards 2026: Sports Category
While Rohit Sharma and Indian women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur received the Padma Shri, tennis legend Vijay Amritraj was conferred with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award. Amritraj was the only sportsperson to receive the Padma Bhushan this year, underlining his lasting contribution to Indian tennis and sports administration. He had earlier received the Padma Shri in 1983 and the Arjuna Award in 1974.
Other Sportspersons Honoured
Along with Rohit Sharma and Harmanpreet Kaur, para athlete Praveen Kumar and Indian women’s hockey team goalkeeper Savita Punia were also named Padma Shri awardees. Sports contributors Baldev Singh, Bhagwandas Raikwar and K Pajanivel were likewise recognised for their achievements and service to sport.
