As India’s T20 World Cup campaign enters a crucial phase, criticism around head coach Gautam Gambhir is growing louder. Following a heavy defeat to South Africa in the Super 8 stage, a result that has left India’s semi-final hopes hanging in the balance, former Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad has launched a sharp attack on Gambhir, questioning his leadership and decision-making.
Gambhir has faced backlash over key team selections, particularly his decision to pick Washington Sundar over Axar Patel in a high-pressure clash. The move drew criticism from fans and former cricketers, including R Ashwin, who openly questioned the call.
Speaking on Haarna Mana Hai, Shehzad suggested that Gambhir’s stint in Indian politics from 2019 to 2024, when he served as Member of Parliament from East Delhi, has influenced his approach as coach.
“When you enter any field, complete focus is required. Gambhir entered politics and his mindset changed. He may not have found success there, but it seems he has brought that same politics into the team environment. This has damaged the image of the Indian team,” Shehzad said.
Shehzad also criticised Gambhir’s handling of team resources, citing Kuldeep Yadav’s limited opportunities in the ongoing tournament. The spinner has featured in just one match so far.
“You have a match-winner like Kuldeep Yadav, but he is not being managed properly,” Shehzad remarked.

He further hinted at possible off-field issues, referencing an on-field exchange between Kuldeep and captain Suryakumar Yadav after the Pakistan game. While both players later dismissed talk of a rift, Shehzad believes there may be more behind Kuldeep’s absence.
Pressure Mounting Ahead of Crucial Clash
Despite remaining unbeaten in bilateral series under Gambhir’s tenure, the World Cup stage presents a different challenge. With India set to face Zimbabwe on February 26, the spotlight remains firmly on Gambhir and Suryakumar as they look to steady the campaign and silence growing criticism.
