Former India opener and ex-national selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth believes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain automatic picks in ODIs, but insists both should regain their rhythm by featuring in domestic cricket.

Since the IPL ended, neither Rohit nor Kohli has played competitive cricket, though both have begun preparations for the upcoming tour of Australia. Ahead of the series, speculation grew about the two stars nearing retirement, with some reports even suggesting this could be their last outing. However, those rumours have been dismissed, and Srikkanth is clear that both belong in the squad.

“Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are superstars. For me, they are automatic choices for the Australia tour. If I were the chairman of selectors, I would appoint Rohit as captain for the ODI series. There’s no doubt about their inclusion. As for the retirement rumours, they should be playing,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

He added that chief selector Ajit Agarkar and the BCCI would certainly have spoken to both players about their plans. According to him, the board would likely advise them to participate in domestic cricket to gain valuable match practice.

“The chairman and the board will tell them to play domestic cricket. It’s good for them and the team. They need match sharpness, and I believe they will do it,” he said. “Kohli might be training in England and Rohit at the NCA, but both are preparing. They’ve expressed their availability and their desire to play until the 2027 World Cup, hoping to win it for India. That’s why they’re still committed, and I’d certainly give them that opportunity.”

Srikkanth underlined the importance of domestic cricket, particularly the Vijay Hazare Trophy, as the best way for the two veterans to rediscover their ODI rhythm.

“For players like Kohli, who has given so much to Indian cricket, I would definitely extend extra consideration,” he added.

India will play three ODIs in Australia from October 19 to 25, with the squad announcement expected soon.
