Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif has openly criticised the BCCI’s decision to remove Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain. On Saturday, Rohit was replaced by Shubman Gill, a move that has sparked intense debate across cricket circles.
Kaif, in a video posted on his X account, expressed disappointment, questioning why Rohit wasn’t given another year at the helm despite his stellar track record. “Rohit Sharma gave India 16 years, but we couldn’t give him even one. As captain, he won 15 out of 16 ICC events, only losing the 2023 final. He lifted the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year and was even named Player of the Match,” Kaif said.
He further added, “Rohit taught many players everything, yet we removed him before the 2027 World Cup. As long as your time is there, you should continue but Rohit didn’t get that chance.”

Gill’s Time Will Come
Kaif acknowledged Shubman Gill’s potential, calling him 'young and promising,' but questioned the timing of the change. “Gill will be a good captain someday, but why the rush? Why not let Rohit continue after guiding India to two ICC titles in eight months?”
The former batter believes stability and experience should have been prioritised, especially after India’s recent ICC success.
What’s Next for Rohit Sharma?
Rohit, who has captained India in 56 ODIs with 42 wins, will still lead the side in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, starting October 19.
