Fire breaks out near stadium during BBL match
An unexpected safety scare briefly grabbed attention during the Big Bash League Qualifier at Optus Stadium, when a fire broke out in bushland just outside the venue while the match was in progress.
As the Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers battled it out on the field, plumes of dark smoke were visible drifting across parts of the ground, alarming spectators and television viewers alike.
The incident occurred midway through the Perth innings, around the 16th over, when thick smoke began rising near one of the stadium entrances. Fans inside the ground could be seen pointing toward the source as concern spread quickly. Despite the unsettling visuals, match officials allowed play to continue, with players such as Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Babar Azam carrying on as usual.

Stadium authorities and emergency services responded swiftly, securing the affected area and ensuring there was no immediate danger to players or spectators. The fire was brought under control within a short period, and no injuries were reported.
Preliminary assessments suggested the blaze may have been caused by burning waste or broken glass igniting dry vegetation, a risk heightened during Australia’s hot summer conditions.
