Damien Martyn
Former Australia cricketer Damien Martyn has shared an emotional account of his recovery after surviving a severe bout of meningitis that left him fighting for his life late last year. The 2003 World Cup winner revealed that what began as an illness on Boxing Day, December 26, 2025, quickly escalated into a medical emergency that required him to be placed in an induced coma.
Martyn, now 54, explained that by December 27 the infection had spread to his brain, forcing doctors to take drastic measures. He remained in a paralysed coma for eight days and was later informed that his chances of survival had been no better than fifty percent. During that time, his family and loved ones endured an anxious wait as doctors worked to stabilise his condition.
When Martyn eventually regained consciousness, the challenge was far from over. He found himself unable to walk or speak, a reality that underscored the seriousness of the illness. Remarkably, within just four days, he began defying medical expectations. To the surprise of his doctors, he was back on his feet, talking, and well enough to be discharged so he could continue his recovery at home.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Martyn expressed deep gratitude to everyone who supported him during the ordeal. He acknowledged the efforts of paramedics, doctors, nurses, as well as the constant encouragement from family, friends, and fans who reached out with messages of care and strength.
The former batter, remembered for his crucial partnership with Ricky Ponting in Australia’s 2003 World Cup final triumph against India, said the experience has profoundly reshaped his outlook on life. He reflected on how suddenly circumstances can change and how valuable time truly is.
