T20 World Cup 2026
Sri Lanka has stepped up preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which it will co-host with India, by announcing extensive security measures and infrastructure upgrades ahead of the high-profile tournament.
The island nation will host 20 matches between February 7 and March 8, with the much-anticipated India vs Pakistan encounter scheduled for February 15 in Colombo. Given the sensitivity surrounding fixtures between the two rivals, Sri Lankan authorities have placed security at the top of their agenda.
Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage said the safety of players, officials and spectators would be paramount throughout the event. According to reports, elite commando units-typically assigned to protect visiting heads of state-will be deployed during the tournament. These units will provide round-the-clock security, escorting teams from their arrival at the airport to their departure after completing their matches.
Players will be under protection during all movements, including travel, hotel stays, practice sessions and match days. Extra precautions will be taken during India-Pakistan matches, which are often marked by heightened emotions due to longstanding political tensions between the two countries.

Alongside security planning, Sri Lanka has used the World Cup as an opportunity to modernise its cricketing venues. The Singhalese Sports Club ground in Colombo has been fitted with new floodlights, while the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy has also been fully readied to host matches.
On the diplomatic front, Sri Lanka Cricket has chosen not to comment on the ongoing tensions between the ICC and Bangladesh. Despite reports suggesting Pakistan could still consider skipping the tournament in support of Bangladesh, SLC has maintained a neutral position.
