India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has reportedly come under the scanner of the International Cricket Council (ICC) following his on-field celebration after a match-winning knock against the West Indies.
Reports suggest that the stylish right-hander could face action ahead of India’s crucial semi-final clash in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup — raising concerns among fans about a possible ban.
Samson removed his helmet and appeared to throw it to the ground moments after striking the winning boundary. He then dropped to his knees in celebration and thanked the Almighty, later describing the moment as “very special” in an interaction on JioHotstar.
What rule could apply?
The issue is not the celebration itself but the act of throwing the helmet. Under Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players can be penalised for “abuse of cricket equipment.” This includes intentionally, recklessly, or negligently throwing items such as helmets or bats.
Damage to equipment or surroundings — even if accidental — can amount to a breach.
Can he be banned?
In most cases, such incidents fall under a Level 1 offence. The maximum penalty at this level is a 50% match fee fine and two demerit points. A match ban is rare unless the offence is upgraded to Level 2 or a player accumulates four demerit points within 24 months.
India are set to face England in the semi-final at Wankhede Stadium on March 5.
