India vs Pakistan: Will Abhishek Sharma return for T20 WC clash on Feb 15? Check updates Photograph: (ANI)
As the anticipation builds for the high-voltage T20 World Cup 2026 clash between India and Pakistan in Colombo on February 15, the Indian camp is facing a fitness concern regarding the team's explosive opener, Abhishek Sharma.
The young left-hander was recently hospitalised in Delhi due to a severe stomach infection accompanied by high fever.
While he has been discharged, the illness has reportedly led to some weight loss and physical weakness.
On Thursday, although the team held a practice session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Abhishek did not participate as he continues his recovery.
What the Captain and Teammates Said
During the recent match against Namibia, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav said, "Abhishek isn't fine still, might take one or two games."
The skipper's statement indicates that the opener remains a doubtful starter for the marquee game against Pakistan.
Despite the uncertainty, spinner Varun Chakravarthy offered a more optimistic view that the opener is good and on the way to join the team.
Abhishek's availability will likely be determined by his performance during the upcoming training sessions in Colombo.

Team management typically monitors his endurance closely; a standard session for the opener often involves batting for over an hour. If he can maintain that intensity in the nets, he may yet feature in the playing XI.
In his absence, Sanju Samson stepped up to open the innings alongside Ishan Kishan against Namibia.
