Defending champions India kicked off their ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign in ideal fashion, registering a comfortable 29-run victory over the United States of America at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday. After a slightly shaky start with the bat, India found stability through their captain, before the bowlers delivered a disciplined performance on a tricky, two-paced surface.
India’s innings did not begin smoothly as the US pacers bowled tight lines and lengths, making run-scoring difficult. The ball held up on the pitch, and Indian batters struggled to find timing. At one stage, India were reeling at 77 for 6, with momentum firmly in the opposition’s favour.
That was when Surya Kumar Yadav stepped up. Playing a composed yet aggressive captain’s knock, Surya blazed his way to an unbeaten 84 off 49 balls, rescuing the innings and pushing India to a competitive total. His innings not only steadied the ship but also gave the bowlers a crucial cushion to defend.
For the USA, Shadley van Schalkwyk was the standout performer with the ball, picking up four wickets and keeping India under pressure for large parts of the innings.
Bowlers Set the Tone Early
India’s bowlers ensured there was no slip-up in the chase. Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj, returning after a long break, provided the perfect start, picking up two wickets each. In the middle overs, Axar Patel and Varun tightened the screws, making scoring difficult against quality spin.
With this win, India will next face Namibia on February 12, before a much-anticipated clash against Pakistan on February 15, though Pakistan are yet to confirm their participation. India, meanwhile, looks firmly on track early in the tournament.
