When India and Pakistan face off on a cricket field, it is never just a match; it is box office. With the T20 World Cup 2026 drawing closer, the anticipation around the India-Pakistan clash is already building.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has offered a frank assessment of the much-awaited contest. Writing in his column for Sportstar, Gavaskar stated that India and Pakistan are routinely placed in the same group during World Cups to guarantee at least one high-profile clash between the arch-rivals. He added that the two sides are often drawn into a relatively comfortable group to ensure progression into the knockout stages.
India and Pakistan have been placed in Group A alongside Namibia, the Netherlands, and the USA, with the marquee clash scheduled for February 15.

‘Real Test Starts Later’
According to Gavaskar, the much-hyped group-stage encounter may not be the true decider of the tournament. He believes the real challenge for both teams will begin in the later rounds, once qualification is secured and pressure intensifies.

India lifted the T20 World Cup in 2024, while Pakistan endured a disappointing campaign, crashing out in the group stage after losses to India and the USA. Gavaskar noted that the USA could pose a stronger challenge this time, thanks to the experience their players have gained through Major League Cricket.

Gavaskar highlighted how leagues like MLC help emerging nations shed the intimidation factor against established stars, giving players invaluable exposure that accelerates their growth.
