India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has shed light on why left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh doesn’t feature regularly in the team’s T20I playing XI. Despite being India’s most successful T20 bowler with over 100 wickets, Arshdeep has often found himself on the bench, with Harshit Rana preferred in recent matches.

Arshdeep, who featured in only two of India’s seven games in the Asia Cup 2025, has delivered impressive performances whenever given a chance. In the third T20I, after missing the first two, he picked up three wickets and was named Player of the Match.

Morkel explained that the decision to rest Arshdeep is part of a broader strategy. “Arshdeep understands that we have a bigger picture in mind. We’re experimenting with different combinations. He’s a world-class bowler who gives us early breakthroughs in the powerplay, but we’re also testing other options against Australia,” Morkel said.

Acknowledging the challenge of team selection, Morkel added, “It’s never easy, and there will always be disappointment. We keep telling the players to stay prepared and make the most of their opportunities. With only a few games left before the World Cup, it’s important to see how they perform in varied situations.”

He emphasized that the rotation policy is necessary. “Every team is experimenting right now. This format demands adaptability. We need to know which players can take on different roles and offer flexibility.”
