BCCI to review Kohli and Rohit’s ODI roles after South Africa series
The BCCI is set to take a key call on the ODI futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa at home. With the 2027 ODI World Cup still several years away, the board wants to assess where the senior duo fits into the long-term plans.
As per reports, senior BCCI officials will meet head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar following the final ODI against South Africa. Although Rohit and Kohli have expressed their desire to feature in the next World Cup, the board and selectors are not ready to guarantee their spots yet and are simultaneously evaluating potential replacements should the need arise.
A BCCI source said that it is essential to give both players clarity regarding their roles and expectations so they are not left uncertain about their future. Rohit has also been advised to prioritise his fitness and overall performance. The board is expected to communicate the team management’s concerns to both players.

There are apprehensions about their form as well, considering they now feature only in one format. While both scored in the third ODI in Australia, India had already lost the series, and their early outings appeared rusty. Sources indicated that the team cannot afford inconsistent starts from its most experienced batters.
The team management wants Rohit to maintain his attacking approach, as he was cautious and slow to take risks in Australia. They believe both he and Kohli must remain the pillars of the batting unit and ease the pressure on the younger players.
Another concern is their limited match practice. The board reportedly expected them to play some competitive cricket in England during the summer. They will now be encouraged to participate in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. India are also scheduled to face New Zealand in an ODI series before the end of the home season, followed by a three-match ODI series against England in July next year.
