BCB rules out compensation for players in case of T20 World Cup withdrawal
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has made it clear that players will shoulder any financial consequences if the team withdraws from the T20 World Cup 2026 in India, ruling out any compensation.
Najmul Islam, chairman of the BCB finance committee, addressed the matter on Wednesday, amid growing speculation over the board’s stance after Bangladesh cited security concerns as the reason for potentially skipping the tournament. He emphasized that the board would not reimburse players in such a scenario.
“Why should we compensate? We invest crores of Taka in the players, yet we never ask them to return money when performance is poor,” Islam said. He compared the relationship between the board and the players to that of a body and its hands-interdependent and inseparable, but not interchangeable.
The comments follow tensions between India and Bangladesh, including the BCCI’s instruction to IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman from their squad. The political backdrop has further complicated Bangladesh’s participation in the World Cup.

Islam also clarified that the players themselves have no say in the decision. “A World Cup squad is not formed by asking the players. The final squad selected will go. This is not their decision,” he stated, reinforcing the board’s authority over participation matters.
For Bangladesh players, this means they could face both financial and professional repercussions without having any influence over the outcome, highlighting the limits of player power in international cricket administration.
