Delays in the operational readiness of vital medical equipment in SCB, Cuttack’s premier medical college and Hospital, have sparked concern, prompting a public interest litigation (PIL) in the High Court. Following the PIL, the Odisha State Medicine Corporation (OSMC) has filed a status report detailing ongoing developments in response to this litigation.
MRI Machine and Other Equipment
In the status report, the OSMC has assured that an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machine, crucial for accurate and non-invasive medical diagnoses, is anticipated to be operational by the end of May. The report further stated that cutting-edge CT (Computed Tomography) scan machines are expected to be functional by early May, enhancing diagnostic capabilities significantly.
Echo machines, pivotal for heart examinations, will also become operational soon. The introduction of ECG (Electrocardiogram) machines, traditionally used in cardiology, for mental health treatment is likely to take time and be installed by August, the OSMC told the court.
Judicial Review
After reviewing the status report, the High Court has scheduled the next hearing on this matter for 19 June, continuing to monitor the situation closely.
“The MD of OSMC has given the status report. In the report, he has mentioned that they will install the CT scan and MRI machine. The SCB authorities also have confirmed the report. But, they have promised to install the ECT machine for neuro surgery department by August,” informed Saroj Kumar Padhy, Advocate Committee member.
