Chennai: Asian Athletic Championships will be held here in August next year and Tamil Nadu Government has earmarked Rs 40 crore for it, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said today.

Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, she said the Games would be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, where a warm up track would be set up and all facilities upgraded to International levels.

Jayalalithaa said the multi-sport games are being held by Athletics Federation of India in collaboration with the State Government. She recalled that the Asian Athletic Association has decided to host the next Championships in India. She said players from 44 countries are expected to participate in the event.

The Chief Minister said to promote sports in villages, the government proposes to conduct games in every village panchayats at a cost of Rs 25.5 crore every year. Earlier, she presented a special prize of Rs three lakh to K Mala who bagged the silver medal in the Asian Weightlifting Championships held at Japan last year.
