Guwahati: Visually challenged students and teachers of Guwahati Blind School, in a bid to protect environment, has taken the initiative to make their campus green.

The students` and faculty members had recently planted more than 300 saplings within the school premises with the help of Assam Forest Department`s Social Forestry Division.

Divisional Forest of Guwahati Social Forestry Division Satyendra Singh said here today that this initiative by the visually challenged should be an eye-opener for others. ``If a visually challenged human being can plant a tree for the noble cause of environmental protection, there is no reason why others cannot plant and protect trees``, he said

These blind students may not be able to visualize the material world but they do surely feel the presence of trees in its soothing cool breeze and the shade and shelter provided by the trees, he added.

Singh further appealed to the people in general to plant at least one sapling in the ongoing monsoon season. Social Forestry Division has recently initiated several innovative plantation programme under the Chief Minister`s Assam Vikash Yojana.
