confidant and trusted friend.
He shared an emotional post for the iconic industrialist hours after his death, saying he would spend the rest of his life trying to fill the hole left in his life by Ratan Tata’s absence.
Friendship Between Shantanu Naidu & Ratan Tata
The friendship between Shantanu and Ratan Tata blossomed from their shared love for animals.
In 2014, while working as an automobile design engineer at Tata Elxis in Pune, Shantanu encountered a heartbreaking sight of a dead stray dog on road. After days of grieving over the incident, he decided to take the matter into his own hands and create a reflective collar to protect stray dogs from being struck by vehicles at night.
Shantanu faced significant funding challenges for his new start up, but when his father encouraged him, Shantanu reluctantly wrote to late Ratan Tata who coincidentally was also an animal lover.
Surprisingly, Tata responded two months later, inviting Shantanu to meet him
in person at his Mumbai office, where he expressed deep admiration for Shantanu’s work.
Impressed by his commitment to animal welfare, Tata decided to support his venture, Motopaws, an initiative aimed at reducing animal-related accidents in India. The initiative quickly gained traction, introducing innovative solutions such as dog collars and sensor-based anti-poaching devices for tigers.
Shantanu Naidu As Tata's Younest Manager
In 2016, Shantanu’s journey took him to Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management in the United States for his MBA. Despite being thousands of miles apart, he maintained a close relationship with Tata throughout his studies.
Naidu excelled at Cornell, earning accolades such as the Hemmeter Entrepreneurship Award and the Johnson Leadership Case Competition, all while staying connected to Tata's office.
Upon completing his degree, Tata offered Shantanu a position as his assistant, where he managed various responsibilities.
Goodfellows: A Companionship Venture
In 2021, Shantanu founded Goodfellows, a companionship service designed for senior citizens facing loneliness—an initiative that resonated deeply with Tata, who understood the pain of isolation, having never married and without children. “You do not know what it is like to be lonely until you spend time alone wishing for companionship,” Tata remarked in an interview, endorsing Shantanu's project.
With Tata’s encouragement, Goodfellows flourished, achieving a reported net worth of ₹5 crore.
Shantanu often described his work as "Ratan Tata-backed," knowing that the industrialist's support came from a place of genuine belief in the causes they championed.
