Guwahati: A one-horned male rhino was injured in the head when poachers opened fire in the Kaziranga National Park on Tuesday night leading to an exchange of fire between them and the forest guards.
Official sources said three poachers entered the Agratoli range of the park at midnight last night and fired on the rhino with an intention to smuggle out the carcass.
The forest guards on patrol alerted by the sounds of gunfire rushed to the spot where the rhino lay injured and engaged the poachers in a firefight.
The poachers, however, managed to escape. The injured rhino was being treated, latest official reports said.
