American display major Infocus, which has turned heads with its first range of smartphones, especially the M2 budget smartphone launched in March, has released three more smartphones to woo the Indian consumers. We got our hands on the mid-segment M308 priced at Rs.12,999 and here is our analysis:

What is good?

The phone has a compact metal body and gives a sturdy-built feel. The SIM-slots and the expandable storage slot is at the side, which is the new trend in most flagship devices.

The phone's 5.2-inch full HD display, which has a pixel density of 423 ppi, makes images look vibrant. There were no problems with viewing angles.

The mid-range 1.3GHz octa-core Mediatek MT6735 processor along with the 2GB RAM handles almost everything that is thrown its way without getting heated up. Casual games and mid-heavy games were no problems for it. No lags were experienced during heavy usage of the phone.

The phone gathered an An Tu Tu benchmark score of 31,810 points which is good enough keeping in mind its price. Geekbench 3 put the phone's multi-core performance higher than the Samsung S5.

The interface of the phone is quite impressive because it is fast, snippy and comes loaded with no bloatware. The phone, which runs latest Android Lollipop at the base, comes with utility and storage apps like safebox, dropbox, WPS office and app traffic control. There is also motion control on the phone which enables the user to control a few key functions just by moving the phone or shaking it.

The rear camera takes superb pictures and has several interesting modes like picture-in-picture, multi-angle and live photo. The back-illuminated sensor (BSI) allows more exposure, making the camera experience better. The front camera is an average performer and has three modes.

The internal memory of the phone is 16 GB and can be expanded to 128 GB using a microSD slot. Location accuracy on the phone is good though the 2,450 mAH battery doles out an average performance.

What doesn't work for the phone?

Due to the metal build of the phone, it feels a little heavy. Operation of the phone also becomes a problem as both the power and volume rocker keys are on the left. Infocus has played it smart with the SD card cum SIM slot which might be a problem for a few users.

Keeping in mind the price, heavy games were a problem for the phone. Switching between them was a problem due to unavailability of more RAM. The camera has no professional mode, which could be a disappointment for many. The performance of the front camera could have been better along with the battery.

There is no Wi-Fi direct on the device and no DLNA or NFC making switching from an old phone to the M808 a problem.

Verdict: The M808 has better design, looks and a good display. The phone is certainly one of the thinnest from its stable. It is definitely a good mid-segment purchase.
