Since the debacle in the 2024 General Elections, the BJD has been trying to figure out the areas where they went wrong and how to set things right.

As a part of this exercise, its Coordination Committee on Thursday held its first meeting after the elections at Sankha Bhawan and recommended some proposals to party supremo Naveen Patnaik.

Sources said the Coordination Committee’s proposals include the formation of a state committee, frequent meetings in districts, assignment of responsibilities to lead organisations, organizing padayatras from Gandhi Jayanti and adopting a strong approach against the ruling BJP.

Once approved by Patnaik, the proposals will be translated into action, sources added.

“We had a threadbare discussion about the steps to be taken. The proposals have been sent to the party’s president for his approval,” said Debi Prasad Mishra, chairman of the BJD Coordination Committee.

As if the party drawing a zilch in the Mayurbhanj district was not enough, Mamata Mohanta recently resigned from the Rajya Sabha and BJD, which is viewed as she dealt the unkindest cut to the party.

In order to improve the party’s position in Mayurbhanj, party president Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday held a meeting with Mayurbhanj district president Sudam Marndi and other leaders.

While speaking to journalists, Marndi on Thursday said, “What I feel is that all are united in Mayurbhanj, people still have faith in Naveen Babu and organisation is still strong.”

Responding to Marndi’s statement, BJP MLA Saroj Padhi said, “Have you ever seen Naveen Babu meeting anyone in the last 24 years? Now he is meeting. What is the reason? Now people have lost their faith in his leaders and leadership. This is why all are contemplating leaving the party. Many things are in store.”

“A wrong message has already been sent out that BJD is a divided party and many leaders are going to jump to other parties. So long as confidence is not built up among workers and leaders, Naveen Patnaik’s efforts would be like squeezing water from a stone,” said political analyst Prasanna Mohanty.
