Rath Yatra 2022: Lords Relish Adhara Pana Atop Chariots

A day after Suna Besha (golden attire ritual), Lord Jagannath and His siblings are offered the Adhara Pana, a rich sweet drink made up of an assortment of milk, banana, cheese, black pepper, nutmeg, camphor and other ingredients and spices.

Adhara Pana is filled in nine large sized open earthen pots, three for each deity on their respective chariots.

Adhara Pana on Darpadalana – Devi Subhadra’s chariot. The earthen pots are placed right in front of the deities in a way that they reach upto the lips of deities.

Bada Thakura Balabhadra offered Adhara Pana refreshment. This is done a day before He proceeds back home with His siblings.

Mahaprabhu relishes Pana atop his chariot. Adhara Pana offering adds to the grandeur of the Rath Yatra celebrations. On Asadha Shukla Pakhya Dwadashi tithi, The Trinity is offered Adhara Pana as part of special ritual called ‘Sodosha Upachar Puja’.

As per rituals, after Adhara Pana is offered to the sibling deities, the pots are smashed on the chariots and the Pana eventually spills so that the subsidiary deities guarding the Lords and all evil 'spirits' who trail the Lords during their sojourn could attain salvation by having this drink.
