Youth roughed up for firing to extort money

Jagatsinghpur: A youth was hospitalised after being thrashed by locals for allegedly firing at another youth for extortion near Kania village under Balikuda police limits in the district late Wednesday night. However, no one was injured in the firing.

As per reports, Sagar Mallick and Rakesh Das of Olabhar village along with two of their friends were speaking to Kulamani Das of Kulia village when an altercation ensued between Kulamani and the others.

In a fit of rage, Sagar took out a gun and opened fire at Kulamani. However, he managed to escape without sustaining any injuries. Subsequently, some locals, who were present at the spot caught Sagar, Rakesh and two other youths and beat them black and blue.

Informed, Balikuda police rushed to the spot, arrested Rakesh, and rushed him to Balikuda Hospital. However, Sagar and the other two youths managed to flee the spot.

Sources said there are several criminal cases pending against Sagar at different police stations of the district.

Although the exact reason behind the firing is yet to be clear, it is being suspected that Sagar, Rakesh and their friends were trying to extort money from Kulamani.
