Bolangir: In an unfortunate incident, a youth succumbed to the injuries today he had allegedly sustained in a lathi-charge by police during CM Naveen Patnaik's road show in Bolangir days before the second phase polls in Odisha. The deceased has been identified as Niranjan Sahu of Agalpur Phatamunda of the district.

According to sources, police had detained Sahu and a few other youths for allegedly pelting eggs at the luxury bus of CM Naveen during the road show on April 15.

But what later came as a shocker was that Niranjan's brother Nakula Sahu alleged that he (Niranjan) was detained at the police station after being beaten up and not admitted to hospital despite his condition being critical.

Even former MP Balgopal Mishra corroborated the incident claiming that Niranjan was physically tortured by the police though he had only come to attend the CM's rally.

His family rushed him to Dungurupalli hospital, but doctors there declared him brought dead, sources said.

"He (Niranjan) was declared brought dead. So far, the actual reason of his death is unclear and it will be known after we receive the post-mortem reports," informed Santanu Meher, doctor at the Dungurupalli hospital.

On the other hand, Sonepur SP Debi Prasad Dash said, "The doctors are suspecting that Niranjan Sahu might have died due to sunstroke and his brother has also said the same thing to police. We have registered a case and post-mortem has been conducted."

Meanwhile, condemning the incident, Odisha BJP's vice-president Samir Mohanty targeted CM Naveen for staying silent on the issue. "The youth died in police lathi-charge during CM Naveen's roadshow. The youth was punished for protesting against CM Naveen. Why is the CM silent? People will give a befitting reply."
