Bhubaneswar: The proposed Xavier University in Puri district will take shape soon as the Odisha Assembly on Friday passed the Xavier University Bill-2013. According to the provision in the bill, 50% seats in the university will be reserved for Odia students.

Higher Education minister Badrinarayan Patra said, "Within two years the proposed university will start functioning near Pipili in Puri. This is for the first time a private university is giving reservation to Odia students."

Sources said the proposed university will provide higher learning in engineering, technology, banking and financial services, humanities, social management, law, natural science and vocational education and training and development studies.

Meanwhile, the bill drew criticism from the main Opposition party. Congress MLA Prafulla Majhi said there was no reason why the government should encourage a private university when there were hardly any chances of growth of the state's people.
