Bhubaneswar: Drawing inspiration from Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar’s latest videos in which he portrays a traffic cop, the Commissionerate Police has now geared up to strictly enforce road safety guidelines in twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

A month-long special drive has been planned and in the first phase, the traffic wing of Bhubaneswar launched a special drive against wrong-side driving which has emerged as a major concern.

Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty informed that the campaign to prevent driving on pavements and wrong-side at major traffic junctions started today.

“Wrong-side driving as well as drag racing on public roads is certainly dangerous, illegal and a matter of concern as the lives of commuters as well as pedestrians are at stake,” said Mohanty.

Mohanty further said that it is everybody’s duty to follow traffic rules.

People caught driving on wrong side were penalized by the traffic officials at two different junctions under Chandrasekhar police limits today.

“Following orders from the police commissioner, a special drive was launched today. The drive aims to ensure safety of commuters and such enforcement will continue in the coming days,” said traffic inspector Surendra Bal.

Though several commuters welcomed such crackdown, many demanded awareness programmes before such enforcement drives.

“Driving on wrong side is certainly illegal. Today, I paid fine for the violation. Hope such enforcement activities by Commissionerate police are conducted at regular intervals,” said a violator.

Another commuter stated that the Commissionerate police should install signage and other billboards to inform people about the traffic rules.
