With this, the massive open-air stage of Bargarh came alive, setting the tone for eleven days of dramatic enactments based on episodes from Lord Krishna’s life.

As part of today’s events, the marriage of Devaki and Basudeva was performed, after which King Kansa seized the throne by dethroning King Ugrasena, marking the beginning of Kansa’s rule.

Entire Bargarh town is abuzz with festive energy as thousands of spectators from across Odisha and outside have started thronging to witness the grand spectacle.

Streets, marketplaces, and performance zones have turned lively, reflecting the cultural richness and theatrical grandeur of Dhanu Jatra, which continues to captivate audiences year after year.

“The auspicious time has arrived today, when I, along with my ministerial staff, will visit Maa Samaleswari temple and have Darshan of the deities. Thereafter, I will go to the Raj Durbar and acting up on the advice of Devarshi Narad and several other Munis (saints), I will get my affectionate daughter Devaki married to Basudeva,” an actor playing the character of King Ugrasena expressed.

Worth mentioning, the search for Kansa—the central antagonist of world-famous Bargarh Dhanu Jatra—had begun on November 17.

As preparations for the 78th edition of the grand open-air festival had gained momentum, auditions started to select the male actor who would portray ‘mighty king’ Kansa this year.
