Bhubaneswar/Bolangir: The construction work of the much-awaited Lower Suktel irrigation project, the lifeline of Bolangir, has kicked off today amid tight security. The government officials, on the other hand, held a meeting with the locals who have been protesting the projects.

The foundation laying work started today after officials made a spot visit. A high level meeting comprising officials from police, district administration and other concerned departments was held regarding the construction before work commenced.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the commencement of project work as some locals are planning to resist government’s move.  There are pockets of resistance to the project as there are apprehensions about submergence of villages due to the project.  At least 10 platoons of police force have been deployed at the site since last night apprehending tension.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kalpataru Das recently announced in the State Assembly that work on the Lower Suktel project would begin from April after getting investment clearance.
