Women block road demanding shifting of liquor shop

Jajpur: About five hundred women belonging to 20 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) on Wednesday staged a road blockade at Chadheidhara chhak on Paradeep-Daitary Express Highway for over five hours demanding shifting of a liquor shop from the locality, police sources said.

The villagers have been opposing sale of liquor in their areas for the last couple of months. Vehicular traffic on the express highway was paralysed following the blockade.

The agitating women have earlier submitted memoranda to the District Collector, the SP and district excise officials on numerous occasions. With authorities paying no heed to their demand, the villagers decided to take matters to the street.

The blockade was withdrawn after Jajpur sub collector Maheswar Panigrahi assured the agitators to fulfill their demand within three days.
