Rourkela: A 78-year-old woman was trampled to death by an elephant at Salangabud in Sundergarh district, police said today. A herd of about 20 elephants entered the village and damaged three houses besides killing the old woman on Wednesday night, DFO, B N Thakur said. Villagers ran out of their houses in panic and took shelter in a pucca house.

Forest officials and police reached the village this morning and paid Rs 5000 to the bereaved family to meet cremation expenses and announced Rs two lakh as compensation from the government.
