Rourkela: After a brief lull, a wild elephant has killed a woman in the Sundergarh district, police said on Friday.
 
A herd of about 16 elephants strayed into Nuagaon village under Hatibari Police Station near Purunapani and destroyed crops and vegetables.
 
When the villagers tried to confront of them, the jumbos got enraged and all the animals except one left the scene late last night, sources said.
 
The tusker which stayed back attacked the house of Ghana Badaik. A wall of the house collapsed in the attack and his wife, Hiramani Badaik (40) died as she buried in the wee hours, police said.
 
The forest department was informed about the incident and death of the woman, said sub-divisional police officer of Biramitrapur, Prabhat Routray.
 
Rs 10,000 was given to deceased's family for rituals and due compensation would be made after verification, Rourkela DFO Sanjt Kumar said adding the anti-depredation squad has been sent for spot verification and meanwhile the movement of the elephant was being watched.
