Angul: A woman in labour pain had to be carried almost 1.5 km on a cot to an ambulance which failed to reach her house at Barakuda village of Pallahara block in Angul due to bad roads.

The villagers even had to cross a drain with water level running at a dangerous level, said sources.

"I took the help of neighbours and relatives to carry my wife on a cot," husband of the woman Naba Kishore Mahanta said.

After being shifted to the ambulance, the woman was rushed to the District headquarters hospital where she underwent the required medical procedures. According to sources, every year the villagers face similar hardships since the drain is yet to have a bridge.

"It was raining heavily and she had to be brought on a cot by the villagers who had to wade through waist-deep water," Asha worker Namita Mahanta said.

Pallahara MLA Mahesh Sahu assured that proper roads will soon be constructed in the village.

"We have plans for some development work in the area and it will be done very soon," Sahu said.
