In a disturbing incident that triggered panic in Rayagada town, a woman working as a data entry operator allegedly attempted self-immolation near the temple of the presiding deity Maa Majhighariani on Sunday.
The woman sustained severe injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, where her condition is reported to be critical.
According to sources, the woman first consumed phenyl, a chemical cleaning liquid, and later set herself on fire in an apparent attempt to end her life near the famous shrine. The incident occurred in a busy area close to the temple, leading to chaos and concern among devotees and passersby present at the spot.
Locals who noticed the woman in distress immediately rushed to her rescue. They managed to douse the flames and promptly alerted the authorities. She was quickly shifted to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment. Doctors attending to her said she has suffered serious burn injuries, compounded by the earlier consumption of the chemical substance.

Preliminary information suggests that the woman was employed as a data entry operator at the Rayagada Municipal Council (RMC) office. However, the exact reason behind her drastic step remains unclear at this stage.
Personnel from the Rayagada Town Police Station reached the spot soon after the incident and began a preliminary inquiry. Police officials said the circumstances leading to the suicide attempt are being investigated, and further details are likely to emerge after questioning the victim and gathering statements from witnesses.
