A shocking case of alleged domestic violence has surfaced from Damarapur village under Pattamundai Rural police station limits in Kendrapara district, where a woman has accused her in-laws of attempting to burn her alive for giving birth to a girl child.

The victim, identified as Sasmita Das, narrowly escaped death in the incident, which reportedly occurred late at night. She alleged that her father-in-law poured petrol and set her bed on fire while she was asleep. Several household items in the room were burnt in the incident.

Sasmita claimed she managed to escape in time and accused her in-laws of continuous physical and mental harassment for giving birth to daughters.
“We already have two daughters, and after the birth of another girl child, the harassment increased. They were trying to kill me. My mother-in-law also tried to burn me alive using a lighter in front of my mother,” she alleged.

Accused Family Denies Allegations

However, the accused family members have denied the allegations and presented a different version of events. The father-in-law, Prafulla Ray, claimed that he set the bed on fire out of anger, alleging that Sasmita slept excessively and did not respond when called.

Her husband, Susanta Ray, echoed the claim, stating, “My father burned the bed because my wife sleeps a lot even when we ask her not to.”

Police have taken cognisance of the matter and launched an investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident. Further details are awaited as the probe continues.
