Why Cuttack's Market Complexes Are Turning Into 'Dumping Yards'

Cuttack: In a bid to provide traders a better place to do their businesses, the Cuttack Development Authority (CDA) had developed several market complexes in different parts of Cuttack. However, due to lack of proper maintenance, most of such commercial centres have turned into dumping yards and dens for anti-social elements, alleged local residents.

From leaking ceilings to unwanted vegetation, the condition of most of the market complexes built by CDA is in a shambles. The market complex at Buxi Bazar speaks volumes about administrative apathy for which most of the shops are now closed.

The condition of the market complex near College Square is no different. Though the building has become dilapidated, the authorities have turned a blind eye to the plight of the traders.

“The building is unsafe as CDA is not maintaining the structures. The traders had collected funds for undertaking some minor repair works here,” said Amitabh Sahu, a trader.

“There is no provision for a toilet for the traders while no steps are being taken for the maintenance of the market complex,” alleged Ranjan Patra, another trader.

As per official sources, the CDA had built 12 market complexes in different parts of the city. So far, only five are in a functional condition while the fate of remaining commercial centers still hangs in balance.

Newly appointed CDA vice-chairman and Cuttack Collector Bhawani Shankar Chaiyini, on the other hand, ruled out privatization of the market complexes.
