Bhubaneswar: The Geographical Indications (GI) Registry will hear a petition demanding rectification/removal of GI Tag for ‘Banglar Rasogola’ on September 6.

The GI Registry has served notices to the two departments of West Bengal government- State Food Processing & Horticulture Development Corporation and Patent Information centre, Department of Higher Education Science & Technology.

The Chennai based GI Registry has also asked the petitioner identified as Ramesh Chandra Sahoo of Simulipatna under Chandaka area in Khurda district of Odisha to appear before the panel on September 6.

“In event of non-appearance, the case will be decided as per GI Act & Rules based on the documents available with the Registry,” the letter from GI Registry read.

According to sources, the petition has reportedly been filed seeking details on what basis Banglar Rasogola has been granted the GI tag.

Earlier, Odisha had applied for GI tag to Pahala Rasagola in 2015, but surprisingly, the tag was given to ‘Banglar Rasagola’ on November 14, 2017. However, Odisha government continued its fight and received the GI tag for ‘Odisha Rasagola’ on July 30 this year.
