Bhubaneswar: With the filing of nominations for elections to 22 civic bodies in Western Odisha ending today, as many as 569 nomination papers have been filed so far, official sources said.

Yesterday, a total number of 143 aspirants had filed their nominations, they added.

While 95 candidates have filed nomination papers in Rajgangpur, 75 and 65 candidates have filed papers for Jharsuguda and Brajrajnagar urban bodies respectively.

Notably out of 22 urban local bodies (ULBs) which will go to polls on November 22, nomination papers have not been filed in four places.

The nomination process on Monday turned violent when Congress and BJP activists seeking deferment of the polls, tried to prevent BJD candidates from filing their papers at the municipality office in Bhawanipatna.

Trouble started when BJD aspirants accompanied by hundreds of supporters came to file their nominations. The protesting lawyers, under the joint action committee (JAC) banner, hurled tomatoes and plastic chairs on BJD nominees.

The agitators also beat up some aspirants while they were returning after filing nominations.

Police resorted to mild lathicharge to rescue the candidates from the clutches of the agitators.

"At least 20 BJD aspirants and three independents managed to enter the office and file their nominations," said an official.
