Villagers demand death penalty after girl’s death

Kendrapara: The residents of a seaside village, from where a minor dalit girl died 12 days after being set on fire after attempted rape, on Friday demanded capital punishment for the perpetrators.

With the Kharinasi village under Mahakalpara block in Kendrapara district in mourning, villagers who visited the home of the 14-year-old victim to pay condolence demanded that the rapists be hanged.

"We are moved by the outpouring of grief and emotion by people all over the state after the death of the girl," Kharinasi GP Sarpanch Sumitra Manna said, adding that a condolence meeting was held in the victim's memory.

There were reports of roads being blocked in places like Kendrapara, Ramnagar, Mahakalpada and Rajnagar, NH-5 (A) in the district.

The blockades for an hour were symbolic and no untoward incident occurred, Sub Divisional Police Officer, Nrusingha Charan Swain said.

The dalit victim, a student of a government-run school, was set on fire on July 28 after she rejected the advances of one of the accused persons.
