Veteran Odia Jatra artist Devi Prasad Rath, widely known by his stage name ‘Mama’, passed away early Wednesday following a cardiac arrest at his home in Paradipgarh in Jagatsinghpur district. According to family members, he suffered the attack while asleep in the early hours of the morning.
Rath had a distinguished career spanning over four decades in the Odia Jatra industry. Beginning as a child artist in stage plays, he went on to perform in over 100 productions, becoming one of the most versatile and respected figures in the state’s performing arts circuit.
He transitioned smoothly from drama to Jatra, taking on roles ranging from hero and villain to elder characters that earned him widespread acclaim.
He formally retired from the Jatra stage in 2017, marking the end of a 42-year journey that defined an era of Odia travelling theatre. His last appearance was in the play “Thaki Dela Bandhu Thikana Bele,” remembered by audiences for his expressive performance and natural dialogue delivery.
Known Affectionately As ‘Mama’
In Jatra circles, Rath’s name became synonymous with dedication and artistry. The moniker ‘Mama’ by which audiences and colleagues fondly called him speaks of his enduring rapport with the community.
His portrayals were known for emotional intensity and effortless humour, which made him one of the most recognisable faces on the Jatra stage.
